Abstract:
Across three studies,we found that participants thought a record of random-patterned behaviors, compared to one of regular-patterned behaviors, could better reveal a target person's intrinsic motivation. We graphically manipulated randomness of an agent's repeated activity. The agent was perceived to enjoy and love the activity more and treat the activity more as fun (vs. work) and some thing he/she wants to do (vs. should do) when the activity displayed a random pattern. We further showed that this inference might be inaccurate sometimes.
